A powerful seismic swarm has prompted thousands of evacuations on the Greek island of Santorini since last week. The tremors, described by Mayor Nikos Zorzos as a “seismic swarm,” could continue for weeks before diminishing.
More than 200 undersea earthquakes with magnitudes up to 5 have been recorded in the volcanic region since Friday. Roughly 9,000 people have left Santorini since Sunday, with emergency flights and ferries adding services to accommodate departures.
Santorini has canceled public events, restricted travel, and banned construction work in certain areas due to the quakes, which caused cracks in some older buildings. However, no injuries have been reported. The island’s population of 15,500 residents is on high alert as seismologists monitor the situation.
Experts say the epicenter of the earthquakes is moving northward away from Santorini and emphasize there is no connection to the area’s dormant volcanoes. While the quakes may last several days or weeks, officials are cautiously optimistic that they will eventually subside.
