U.S. ranked ‘so wealthy but so unhappy’ by new report card on American well-being.

A recent report has revealed that the United States is “so wealthy but so unhappy” compared to other countries. The report, titled “State of the Nation,” analyzed data from 1990 to 2023 across 15 topics, including the economy, environment, life satisfaction, mental health, and inequality.

The U.S. ranks second-largest in terms of economy, yet it struggles with most other aspects. It is classified as a “nation of extremes.” The report highlights areas where the country excels, such as worker productivity and GDP growth, but also notes its weaknesses.

Life satisfaction rates are declining in the U.S., ranking among the lowest globally. Mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and suicidal rates are also on the rise. The report suggests that this may be linked to social isolation, which is increasing due to factors such as smartphone proliferation.

The country has a high murder rate compared to other nations, with gun laws being cited as a primary factor. Furthermore, Americans rank among the worst in terms of fatal overdose rates and social isolation.

These findings are attributed to a combination of economic growth at any cost, as well as broader societal issues like loneliness and violence. The report emphasizes that addressing these challenges is crucial for improving the country’s overall well-being.
