The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is set to star in the upcoming psychological thriller “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” marking his first leading film role. The movie, directed by Trey Edward Shults, features a semi-autobiographical storyline that explores Tesfaye’s struggles with insomnia and his journey towards self-discovery.
“Hurry Up Tomorrow” is the feature-length accompaniment to Tesfaye’s sixth album of the same name, released on January 31 through XO and Republic Records. The film also stars Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in supporting roles.
The movie boasts a star-studded cast, with Shults, Reza Fahim, and Tesfaye himself contributing to the script. While this marks Tesfaye’s first lead role in a film, he has experience working in Hollywood, having co-created and starred in the 2023 HBO drama “The Idol” and appeared in 2019’s “Uncut Gems.”
Tesfaye has expressed his desire for “Hurry Up Tomorrow” to be his last album as The Weeknd, stating that this project is a way for him to conclude his artistic chapter. Director Shults praises Tesfaye’s acting abilities, saying he brings depth and nuance to the role.
The film is set to hit theaters on May 16 through Lionsgate, offering fans a new perspective on one of music’s most captivating artists.
