Met Gala 2025 Theme Revealed as Black Dandyism Takes Center Stage

The 2025 Met Gala’s theme is centered around the concept of black dandyism, a style that emerged in 18th-century Europe and has since been reclaimed by Black people to express their identity. This year’s dress code, “Tailored for You,” will coincide with the “Superfine” Costume Institute exhibit, which explores the evolution of Black menswear style through the ages.

The Met Gala, chaired by Anna Wintour since 1995, is set to return to The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” the exhibit will celebrate this style through art, fashion, and culture. The dress code is designed to provide guidance while inviting creative interpretation.

This year’s co-chairs include LeBron James as an honorary co-chair, alongside Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, and Lewis Hamilton. The guest list includes a diverse range of celebrities, artists, writers, musicians, and taste-makers from the Black community, such as André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Simone Biles, and Janelle Monáe.

The Met Gala has faced criticism in the past for insensitive themes, but this year’s celebration is aimed at embracing Black identity. The event will raise money for the museum’s Costume Institute and provide a platform to showcase the cultural significance of black dandyism.
