Hugging Face Launches Open Version of Deep Research Tool

A team of developers at AI platform Hugging Face has created an open version of OpenAI’s deep research tool, called Open Deep Research. This project uses the company’s proprietary o1 model and an agentic framework to guide its analysis.

The goal of this effort is to make advanced web crawling capabilities more accessible, but currently, it only delivers results comparable to a limited preview version available on paid plans.

Open Deep Research has shown promising performance, achieving 54% on the GAIA benchmark for general AI assistants. In contrast, OpenAI deep research scored 67.36%. However, users reported encountering technical issues with the public demo.

Despite these challenges, Hugging Face aims to improve the experience by making its source code available on GitHub. It’s worth noting that existing models based on o3 often outperform others in complex question-answering and information gathering tasks.

The researchers acknowledge the crucial component missing from Open Deep Research is the o3 model underpinning deep research, which remains unmatched by most competing alternatives.
