Tailoring Takes Center Stage at 2025 Met Gala

For the first time, tailoring will be the star of the show at the iconic Met Gala. The 2025 gala, set for May 5, has introduced a new dress code: “tailored for you.” This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” celebrates the history of Black dandy and its impact on fashion.

The exhibition will focus solely on designers of color, marking a significant milestone in the museum’s Costume Institute. The show will also highlight men’s wear for the first time in over 20 years, shedding new light on this often-overlooked aspect of fashion.

A diverse host committee has been formed to promote the event, including stars like Doechii and Simone Biles, as well as artists Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Kara Walker. The committee joins previously announced co-chairs ASAP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and LeBron James.

Lindsay Peoples, a founder of the Black in Fashion Council, praises the exhibition’s theme as “overdue.” She believes the Met Gala’s red carpet will be an opportunity for Black fashion designers to explore new creative avenues. The event promises to be a celebration of diversity and inclusivity, not just in terms of racial representation but also intellectual curiosity.

Tickets for the 2025 Met Gala have sold out at $75,000 each, with proceeds benefiting the Met’s Costume Institute.
