Google Gemini Utility Extension Brings Functionality Boost

Google has introduced a new utility extension for its Gemini AI assistant, expanding its capabilities and bridging the gap with its rival, Google Assistant. The update allows users to ask Gemini to perform various tasks, such as managing alarms, opening apps, and controlling media, previously exclusive to Google Assistant.

The extension is rolling out starting today, enabling Android users who have chosen Gemini as their digital assistant to access these features. To activate the extension, users must enable Gemini Apps activity and set it to on by default.

Google’s efforts to integrate Gemini into its ecosystem are ongoing, with the company merging the Gemini team with DeepMind in October. This move aims to streamline development and enhance functionality. In August, Google announced Gemini as the default assistant on the Pixel 9 series, further solidifying its position as a replacement for Google Assistant.

While the exact timeline remains unclear, it’s evident that Google is committed to replacing Google Assistant with Gemini. As the utility extension continues to expand, users can expect even more features and capabilities to be added in the future.
