A boil water notice affecting nearly 17,000 residents in Richardson, Texas, is expected to last until Friday as officials await test results on the city’s water supply. The notice was issued on Wednesday and prompted five local schools to close Thursday.
City Manager Don Magner said the earliest the notice can be lifted is mid-morning Friday, when results from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality are expected. The issue began when one of three water towers in the affected area lost pressure to 0 PSI for about five minutes. This raised concerns that bacteria could form in the water.
To address the situation, the city handed out over 1,000 cases of bottled water to residents at a local recreation center on Wednesday night. Water distribution is scheduled until Thursday evening and will resume Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., as long as the notice remains active.
Residents are advised to boil their water before using it for drinking, cooking, or making ice. The city will also conduct an investigation into the pressure drop to prevent similar incidents in the future. Richardson ISD plans to reopen schools that were closed on Thursday, with precautions in place to ensure student safety.
