GIMP 3.0 is now available in its near-final version, allowing users to test the update and report any bugs that need to be fixed. This marks a significant update for the popular open-source image editor, with improvements to the user interface, color management, and plug-in support.
The new logo and splash screen have been introduced, alongside changes to the Legacy icon theme and updates to the user interface. The team has also focused on color management, ensuring that old project files from past versions can be rendered in GIMP 3.0. This update also marks GIMP’s transition from GTK 2.x to 3.x.
The plug-in developers will welcome new gradient options and improved support for formats like BMP and TIFF. The public API has been finalized, allowing users to begin porting their 2.10 scripts. Tutorials and porting guides will be provided by the team during the release candidate phase.
Design updates include a new feature that allows users to flip through dockable dialogue tabs using the mouse scroll wheel. However, the overall interface remains similar to previous versions, ensuring minimal disruption for users.
The GIMP team has secured stable funding through a fiscal sponsorship agreement with the GNOME Foundation and will release the final version as soon as they are confident in its stability. The release candidate 1 is available for download on the GIMP official website, supporting Linux, Windows, and macOS.
