Eleven people died in the worst school shooting in Swedish history, leaving hundreds injured. Witnesses recalled hearing 10 gunshots before the attack, which occurred at the Risbergska school in Orebro on Tuesday.
Marwa, a student who witnessed the attack, described seeing three people bleeding on the floor and one person with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. She and her friend tried to help by wrapping a shawl around the injured man’s shoulder to reduce bleeding.
Teacher Lena Warenmark was confined to her study for over an hour after hearing the gunshots, while Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it “the worst mass shooting in Swedish history”.
Police say the motive behind the attack is unclear, but they believe it was not ideological. Ali el Mokad, a relative of one of the suspected victims, described seeing his cousin’s friend crying after witnessing the injured people on the floor.
The attack at the adult education centre, which sits on a campus home to other schools, marks a rare incident in Sweden. A school shooting occurred last September, linked to gang violence. The death toll is expected to rise as several people were injured.
