Google Sees Quantum Computing Breakthroughs in Five Years

Google is optimistic about releasing commercial quantum computing applications within five years, according to a report. This timeline is sooner than predicted by investors and experts, who had forecasted several years to two decades.

The company’s founder and lead of Google Quantum AI, Hartmut Neven, expressed confidence that real-world applications will be developed using quantum computers. Quantum computing promises to deliver computers thousands of times more powerful than traditional ones, which could be used in superior battery development, new drug creation, and alternative energy sources.

Google has been working on quantum computing since 2012 and recently made breakthroughs with its new chips and discovery of a new approach to quantum simulation. This technology can efficiently solve complex mathematical problems, potentially breaking widely used encryption algorithms and enhancing AI systems.

A global competition, XPRIZE Quantum Applications, was launched to apply quantum computing to real-world challenges. The three-year, $5 million competition aims to prove the potential for practical utility of quantum computing in solving societal issues.
