Thieves have stolen over 100,000 organic eggs worth more than $40,000 from a warehouse in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. The theft, which occurred on Saturday night, is a major felony given the value of the stolen goods. This incident follows a national egg shortage due to a bird flu outbreak that has led to the culling of millions of hens.
The egg shortage has caused prices to surge, with the average cost of eggs increasing by 50% since last year. Some stores have reported empty shelves, and restaurants like Waffle House are imposing surcharges on eggs. The stolen eggs were taken from a trailer at Pete and Gerry’s Organics warehouse shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the case, which has left investigators stunned. “This is a major felony,” said Trooper Megan Frazer. “I’ve been on the force for 12 years and I’ve never seen anything like this.” The investigation is ongoing.
