LSU Coach Brian Kelly Denies Abandoning Injured Player

LSU head coach Brian Kelly disputed comments made by the father of former safety Greg Brooks Jr., who claimed Kelly abandoned his son after he underwent brain tumor surgery in September 2023. Brooks Sr. stated that he hadn’t heard from Kelly or the coaching staff since shortly after surgery, prompting a lawsuit against LSU and its medical center.

However, Kelly denied the allegations, stating that he was present virtually every day through one of his staff members during Brooks Jr.’s recovery process. Kelly expressed his love for Brooks Jr. as a person, competitor, and battler, while acknowledging the difficulties the young player is facing.

Brooks Jr., who suffered multiple strokes during surgery, remains permanently disabled but is cancer-free after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The lawsuit alleges that the surgeon who performed the brain tumor removal was not qualified to perform the procedure, causing “catastrophic neurological injuries” that left Brooks Jr. with long-term disabilities.
