Sonos is reportedly working on its first streaming player, codenamed Pinewood, which could arrive soon but might come at a hefty price. The device’s cost is expected to range between £200 to £400 ($200 to $400), significantly more expensive than other popular streaming players like the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (£60 to £79) and Google Chromecast with Google TV (£35 to £59). Even Apple TV 4K, a top competitor, starts at £149.
Pinewood is said to offer a unified software experience combining content from platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney Plus. The device will also feature Sonos Voice Control and come with a physical remote control for popular streaming apps. Unreleased images reveal that Pinewood has several HDMI ports with passthrough functionality, allowing users to connect external devices like gaming consoles or 4K Blu-ray players.
Rumored features of the device include lag-free wireless audio transmission to Sonos soundbars and support for gigabit ethernet and Wi-Fi 7, which would be a first for the company. However, all this information comes from unconfirmed sources, and Sonos has yet to confirm any details about Pinewood’s release or pricing.
