100,000 Eggs Stolen as Bird Flu Drives Up Prices

Thieves stole over 100,000 eggs worth $40,000 from a grocery store in Pennsylvania. The heist occurred on February 1 at Pete & Gerry’s Organics, targeting the back of a lorry. This comes as the price of eggs has surged due to a bird flu epidemic.

The US government data shows that egg prices have increased by over 65% in the past year, with a predicted 20% rise by 2025. Waffle House recently introduced a $0.50 surcharge per egg, citing the “unprecedented rise” in egg prices.

The bird flu epidemic started in 2022 and has led to outbreaks across the US. In December, prices increased by over 8%, with an average carton price of $2.51 rising to $4.15 by the end of last year. The surge has caused bare shelves in some stores, but human infection is rare.
