2K Games has removed its president, Michael Condrey, from the helm of 31st Union after the studio’s highly anticipated online multiplayer game, Project Ethos, failed to gain significant player interest. The decision comes as the project’s fate remains uncertain.
Condrey was ousted as studio head on February 3 but will continue advising Project Ethos. This leadership change occurs amid a quarter where parent company Take-Two prepares to announce its earnings. Notably, Take-Two has a history of announcing project cancellations as write-downs in its quarterly results.
31st Union had been working on Project Ethos for several years under Condrey’s leadership, which was marked by challenges and an “identity crisis.” The game’s announcement last fall sparked muted reactions, particularly when compared to the excitement surrounding other live-service games.
The studio has a sister site in Valencia, Spain, and Condrey previously co-founded Sledgehammer Games. Despite his departure, 2K remains committed to Project Ethos and its team.
