Sonos is set to release its first-ever streaming media box, dubbed Pinewood, which combines content from popular platforms like Disney+, Netflix, and Prime Video. The device will feature a universal search function, voice control, and a physical remote with shortcuts.
What sets Sonos’ box apart is its HDMI switch capabilities, allowing users to connect multiple devices to their TV. It can wirelessly transmit audio to Sonos soundbars, enhancing home theater sound beyond the TV’s original capabilities. Users can also create custom left and right audio channels using other Sonos speakers for a makeshift surround sound system.
The interface has been described as “beautiful,” but pricing is a major concern. Estimated costs range from $200 to $400, making it significantly more expensive than competitors like Apple TV 4K ($129) and Roku Ultra ($79). If Pinewood can deliver enough value with its features, such as customizable audio and HDMI inputs, it may attract customers seeking premium options beyond budget brands.
