Ukraine President Opens Door to Direct Talks with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his willingness to negotiate directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as long as it’s the only way to bring peace to the Ukrainian people and prevent further losses. In an interview published on Tuesday, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine needs a peaceful resolution to end the war and guarantee its security.

Zelenskyy stated that he will engage in talks with four participants, including representatives from the US, EU, Russia, and Ukraine. He also acknowledged that his country may lose some territory to Russia, but pointed to NATO membership as Ukraine’s best chance to achieve peace.

The Ukrainian president estimated that 45,100 of its citizens have been killed in the war, with over 390,000 injured. In contrast, Zelenskyy claimed that Russia has suffered significantly more casualties, with an estimated 350,000 deaths and 700,000 injuries.

US President Donald Trump expressed his country’s willingness to engage in talks with both Russia and Ukraine, but provided no further details. The development comes as Russian President Putin previously stated that he would be open to peace talks, but shifted the blame for not resolving disputes and ruled out direct talks with Zelenskyy.
