China Retaliates Against US Trade Tariffs with Higher Duties

China has increased its tone following the US administration’s introduction of trade tariffs, warning that it will take necessary measures to protect its rights and interests. Chinese Ministry of Commerce Spokesperson He Yongqian stated that China would not provoke trade disputes and remained open to resolving problems through discussions.

The move comes after the US announced 10% tariffs on Chinese goods, prompting China’s retaliatory duties of up to 15% on US liquefied natural gas and select products starting February 10. The US also halted a so-called de minimis exemption, making it more expensive for Chinese e-commerce merchants to ship products directly to US consumers.

He Yongqian urged the US to create a “fair and predictable” environment for cross-border e-commerce. This is not the first time China has expressed dissatisfaction with US trade policies, but the tone appears tougher than previous comments.
