Google’s AI-generated search results are still prone to errors, as recently demonstrated by a Wisconsin cheese market owner who used the company’s Gemini AI tool to write product descriptions for a Super Bowl ad. The commercial claimed that Gouda accounts for 50-60 percent of the world’s consumption, but this statistic is incorrect and has been widely disputed online.
The error highlights the limitations of generative AI technology, which can produce inaccurate or misleading results. Google is pushing to incorporate its Gemini AI tool across its products to stay competitive with US AI rivals OpenAI and Meta, as well as new Chinese competitors.
In response to criticism, a Google spokesperson said that the company updated the commercial to remove the incorrect statistic, after consulting with the Wisconsin cheese market owner. However, the issue has raised concerns about the reliability of Google’s search results and the need for more rigorous testing and quality control measures.
