Health officials have confirmed the presence of H5N1 (bird flu) in a backyard poultry flock in San Mateo County, California. The detection highlights the risk to anyone who handles or lives near birds.
Residents keeping small flocks in their yards are advised to watch for signs of avian influenza and take precautions such as washing hands after handling birds and disinfecting footwear. “Protect your flock and yourself from H5N1,” says San Mateo County Agricultural Commissioner Koren Widdel.
Bird flu has been detected in multiple counties, including California, due to seasonable wild bird migration. The disease is mainly spread through contact with wild birds, surfaces, and other animals, emphasizing the need for simple actions to prevent its spread.
