The Carolina Hurricanes came close but ultimately fell short against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center. Despite outshooting their opponents 15-7 in the first period, they trailed 1-0 after a goal just two minutes into the game. The Canes continued to pressure in the second and third periods, earning a penalty shot, but could not find a way past Filip Gustavsson. A fortunate bounce of the puck off Frederik Andersen’s back gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead with 49 seconds left in the third period. Carolina finally scored with two minutes remaining, but couldn’t capitalize on late chances to tie the game and force overtime. Andersen finished with 22 saves on 24 shots.
