Toyota Motor North America is recalling a small number of 2018 Camry and certain older Lexus vehicles due to potentially failing low-pressure fuel pumps. The affected vehicles include the 2019 model year NX 300 and RX 350 L. Approximately 858 vehicles, with 848 being 2018 Camry models, are estimated to be impacted.
The issue is related to faulty impellers manufactured by Denso, a Japanese company that has faced multiple safety recalls in the past. The impellers may have surface cracks due to improper production processes, leading to excessive fuel absorption and engine stalling. Sudden engine stalling while driving at high speeds significantly increases the risk of a crash.
Toyota started investigating this matter in May 2024 after receiving reports from Japan about vehicles that would not start. The company has determined that pumps recovered from Japanese Market Demand (JDM) vehicles should have been part of a previous safety recall, but Denso’s incorrect production history information led to its exclusion. Additionally, Toyota made errors in identifying the affected vehicles.
Affected Camrys were assembled between February 1, 2018 and April 6, 2018. For NX 300 and RX 350 L, the relevant periods are April 22, 2019 and August 2, 2019. Known owners will be notified by first-class mail to replace their fuel pump between March 9, 2025 and March 23, 2025.
The recall does not affect Toyota’s new model year 2025 Camry, which has become a hybrid-only vehicle. In contrast, the Lexus NX sold 74,488 units in 2024, while the best-selling RAV4 reached 475,193 units. The RX is no longer available with three rows and has been replaced by the TX, priced at $50,325 and $56,490 respectively.
