NYC Zoos Alert Bird Flu Outbreak Amid Avian Influenza Concerns

Three ducks at the Queens Zoo have died from bird flu, while 12 other birds may have been exposed to the virus. The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is investigating after lab tests on nine wild birds and three collection ducks at the Bronx Zoo are pending.

The WCS has reviewed its protocols to prevent bird flu transmission and taken precautions at its zoos and aquariums. Vulnerable bird species were moved to protected areas over the past two weeks, with veterinarians closely monitoring the situation.

This comes after Governor Kathy Hochul ordered live bird markets across NYC to temporarily shut down following seven cases of bird flu in poultry detected during routine checks. However, the WCS assures that its parks will remain open due to low risk of human-bird contact.
