Denzel Washington on Being Snubbed by Oscars

Denzel Washington expressed his nonchalant reaction to being excluded from the best supporting actor category at the 2025 Academy Awards, saying he’s “not losing sleep over it.” The actor spoke with the New York Times about his disappointment and why it doesn’t affect him. Washington pointed out that he has been in the industry long enough to understand its dynamics and has shifted his focus to other pursuits.

He expressed his happiness for those who received nominations and mentioned his recent performances, including a Broadway production of “Othello.” The actor also noted that while Oscar recognition is significant, it’s not essential for him. Washington won Oscars in the past, including best supporting actor for 1990’s “Gladiator” and best leading actor for 2002’s “Training Day.”

Washington’s exclusion from the Academy Awards doesn’t affect the recognition he received at other award shows like the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and NAACP Image Awards. The film “Gladiator II,” in which Washington starred alongside Ridley Scott, earned a total of four nominations.
