Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party has won the most seats in a high-stakes state election in India for the first time in over 25 years. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 47 seats in the 70-member assembly, ousting the Aam Aadmi party (AAP), which had ruled the territory since 2015.
The AAP won 22 seats, while the main opposition Congress party lost all of its seats for the third consecutive term. In a surprise move, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia lost their seats despite the party’s strong support from its welfare policies and anti-corruption movement.
“We accept the mandate of the people with great humility,” Kejriwal said in a statement after congratulating Modi on the BJP’s victory. He vowed to continue serving the people as a constructive opposition.
The BJP’s victory is seen as a significant boost for the party, which failed to secure a majority in last year’s national election. The outcome marks a shift in power dynamics, with the AAP losing its stronghold on the territory.
