Irish boxer John Cooney, the current Celtic super-featherweight title holder, has died a week after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage following his recent defeat to Nathan Howells in Belfast. He was 28 years old.
Cooney’s fight with Howells ended in the ninth round and required surgery for the injury. Despite efforts from the medical staff at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, Cooney passed away on Saturday, leaving behind a loving family and fiancée Emmaleen.
The boxing community is in shock over Cooney’s sudden death, with former world champion Barry McGuigan describing him as “just a lovely kid.” The family of Cooney has thanked the hospital staff for their tireless efforts to save his life and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans worldwide.
