Consumer confidence has declined significantly since President Donald Trump took office. A recent survey by the University of Michigan found a 5% drop in consumer sentiment, from 71.1% in January to 67.8% this month. Americans now expect inflation to rise to 4.3% this year, a 1% increase from last month.
The concerns are largely driven by Trump’s executive orders and potential tariffs, which have caused anxiety among many voters. Early polling data showed that the speed of his executive actions concerned nearly half of the country.
Some of those feeling anxious include President Trump’s own supporters. Paul Bisson, a 58-year-old businessman from Texas, expressed his concern over the economic impact of Trump’s policies. He hopes the tariffs are just a negotiation tactic and worries that they will make the economy worse.
A geneticist, Nicholas Schuch, has even considered transferring half of his life savings to Switzerland due to its stable monetary policy. His sentiment reflects the mood of many Americans who expect chaos under Trump’s presidency.
