The study focused on a lamp-like robot equipped with a 6-axis robotic arm and a head containing a light and projector. The researchers programmed the robot with two types of movements: purely functional ones and more expressive movements designed to communicate the robot’s internal state. In user testing, the expressive movements significantly improved people’s engagement with and perception of the robot.
The research found that balance is crucial between engagement through motion and completing tasks. Older participants were less receptive to expressive robot movements, suggesting that robot behavior may need to be customized based on user preferences.
