AARP’s annual Movies for Grownups Awards have kicked off, celebrating films and actors that showcase the experiences and perspectives of adults over 50. The ceremony, hosted by Alan Cumming, highlighted the talents of older actors who continue to shine in Hollywood.
Best Picture went to “A Complete Unknown,” a biopic about Bob Dylan, with standout performances from Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez. The film is a love letter to Dylan’s music and legacy, making it a must-watch for fans of the iconic singer-songwriter.
Jacques Audiard took home the Best Director award for his musical drama “The Substance,” which also stars Demi Moore. The film tackles themes of ageism and features Moore’s daring performance as an actress who takes a youth potion with horrific consequences.
Other notable winners include Adrien Brody, 51, for his role in “The Brutalist” as the obsessive architect László Tóth, and Peter Sarsgaard, 53, for his supporting role in “September 5.” The awards also recognize the importance of representation in Hollywood, highlighting the need for more accurate portrayals of older adults on screen.
These recognitions are especially significant, given that nearly half of recent Oscar acting nominees are over 50, and many AARP members use these awards to predict who will win at the Oscars.
