Google Keep for Android has introduced a new design change by replacing its bottom bar with a Floating Action Button (FAB). While this change may seem small, it’s causing some users frustration. The main issue is the need to move their finger up again after tapping the FAB for the second time, as the menu is now closed.
On the other hand, the new design brings several benefits, including consistency with Google’s other productivity apps and a more Material 3 look. The grid view has also been improved, providing more information without requiring users to scroll. For those who use their Android device on larger screens, such as tablets and foldables, Keep is now optimized for this format.
New features include handwritten notes, floating notes, and lock screen notes. Handwritten notes allow users to sketch, doodle, or brainstorm ideas using handwriting, images, and text. Floating notes enable capturing ideas from anywhere with the stylus, while lock screen notes capture thoughts directly from the device’s lock screen.
Other updates for Google Keep include integration with Google Tasks and Calendar, as well as location functionality for reminders. The app is also getting a Gemini-powered search feature, similar to the Pixel Recorder’s transcription capability.
Some users are calling out missing features, such as password protection for certain notes. However, overall, many find that the core feature set of Google Keep is sufficient for their needs, and they appreciate the app’s occasional updates.
As with any software update, there are differing opinions on what features should be added next. Some users would like to see a Material 3 overhaul for the web version, while others think Google Keep should bring its productivity capabilities up to par with Apple Notes.
