A river on the outskirts of Buenos Aires has turned a deep red, sparking fears of industrial chemical dumping. The Sarandí stream, near Villa Inflamable in Avellaneda municipality, was found to contain aniline, a toxic substance used in dyes and medicines.
Local resident María Ducomls described waking up to powerful odors before noticing the blood-red waterway. “It looks like a stream of blood; we have never seen it like this,” she said. Officials suspect the presence of aniline, which has been reported by residents as causing unusual colors in the past – gray, green, violet, blue and brown.
The municipality of Avellaneda has filed a complaint with the Buenos Aires province ministry of infrastructure and public services, leading to an investigation. Residents have been reporting environmental contamination since the 1990s, with several cases still open.
