Rob McElhenney, star and producer of “Mythic Quest,” is hyped for the upcoming crossover between his show and ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” In an interview with Decider to promote Season 4 of Mythic Quest, McElhenney said that fans who watched “Volunteers” – the episode where Paddy’s Pub gang meets Abbott Elementary’s teachers – will be in for a surprise.
The crossover episodes, which will air in Season 17, will show the same story told through different lenses. McElhenney believes that fans will be shocked by how differently the two shows approach the same narrative.
“I think we’re going to surprise quite a few people,” McElhenney said. “We were able to do the Abbott Elementary tone that’s already aired and I hope people enjoyed it, but that same story is going to be told now through the Sunny lens in a few months.”
Charlie Day, who stars alongside McElhenney on “It’s Always Sunny,” shared his excitement for the crossover episode. He hinted at some “R-rated” content that will be revealed when the episodes air.
The “It’s Always Sunny” team has consistently pushed the boundaries of comedy and darkness over its 20-year run. The show, which also stars Glenn Howerton, Danny DeVito, and Kaitlin Olson, has become known for its unpredictable humor and unexpected moments.
When the Abbott Elementary side of the crossover episode is currently streaming on Hulu, fans can expect a darker take on the same story told by “It’s Always Sunny.” With no premiere date yet announced, fans will have to wait a few more months to see what’s in store.
