In a tumultuous time, many are worried about their rights, livelihoods, safety, children, and nation’s future. As the Mississippi Free Press newsroom faces threats from anti-democracy forces, we must draw strength from our values of kindness, grace, and truth-telling.
The 1939 British phrase “Keep Calm and Carry On” has become a reminder for me to breathe deeply and keep going, especially during times of uncertainty. This phrase was created when the UK was under threat from Nazis, making it harder to comprehend trying to carry on daily lives while facing dire fear and uncertainty.
As we navigate this challenging period, staying calm is crucial. It requires showing love and care for each other, as well as minimizing recrimination towards those who have made efforts to save democracy. Many factors contributed to our current situation, but it’s essential to remember that democracy is always messy and a struggle worth fighting for.
At the MFP, we will continue to report the truth that affects people in Mississippi and America, particularly those who have not fully enjoyed their rights and freedoms. We’ll work with Mississippians beyond divides and partisanship, even in difficult times.
Recently, one of our team members received an email threatening to destroy our publication if we’re labeled as a “racist organization.” This is unacceptable and tries to silence honest reporting on racism that hurts many. However, we won’t be deterred.
We expect threats from those who disagree with our reporting, but we won’t let fear break our spirit. We will continue to do this work on your behalf, seeking solutions in communities alongside you. Our support depends on your continued donations, including a post-election Zoom talk and matching gifts for our NewsMatch campaign.
Let’s stand together to maintain and grow democracy, despite inevitable roadblocks. The journey is worth it, and we’re here to report in the breach.
