A mass grave containing at least 28 migrant bodies has been discovered in Libya’s desert region, according to authorities. The discovery was made just days after another mass grave with 19 bodies was found in the same city. Officials say they found the latest grave during a raid on a human trafficking site, where 76 migrants were detained and tortured.
The attorney general said a gang was behind the violence, subjecting migrants to cruel treatment. One Libyan and two foreigners have been arrested. The search is ongoing, with authorities documenting survivor testimonies and conducting autopsies on the recovered bodies.
Libya has become a major transit route for migrants seeking to reach Europe since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) described a previous mass grave found last year as “deeply shocking.” In 2024, over 2,200 people died or went missing while attempting to cross the Mediterranean.
