Lebanon’s Diaspora Returns Home After Devastating War

The devastating war between Israel and Hezbollah has left Lebanon severely damaged, prompting many Lebanese living abroad to return home and offer their support. With the country’s economy in crisis and sectarian tensions running high, these diaspora members are grappling with what the future holds.

Lebanese have been leaving their homeland in waves since the late 19th century, fleeing sectarian divisions, economic crises, famine during World War I, and politically motivated killings. Many established new lives in countries like Australia, Brazil, Nigeria, and the United States. Today, they are watching how the new government plans to rebuild the economy, enforce the truce between Israel and Hezbollah, and stabilize the nation.

For many diaspora members, the decision to return is not an easy one. “I don’t think resilience is something very positive,” said Konrad Kanaan, a 31-year-old lawyer based in France who was visiting Beirut recently. “It’s draining.” He and his family are considering whether to stay or leave due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty about the group Hezbollah’s future.

Rabie Kanaan, a 35-year-old business developer from Australia who is originally from southern Lebanon, has been unable to bring his 8-year-old daughter to visit her ancestral home due to the devastation caused by the war. “She’s always asking, ‘Dad, why are they always fighting in our country?'” he said. He tries to reassure her that ordinary people just aim for peace.

The diaspora community has sent millions of dollars in remittances to Lebanon in recent years, supporting the economy and helping families rebuild their homes. However, many are now questioning whether it’s worth continuing to invest in a country that seems to be stuck in a cycle of conflict and instability.

As the new government seeks to rebuild and stabilize the nation, many diaspora members will be watching with bated breath. Will Lebanon finally find peace and prosperity, or will the cycle of violence continue? Only time will tell.
