AMD has achieved a major milestone by outselling Intel in the datacenter space for the first time in history. In its Q4 2024 financial results, the company reported a record-breaking $3.86 billion in net revenue from its datacenter business, a 69% increase year-over-year and a 9% quarter-over-quarter rise.
The company’s datacenter business was the primary source of earnings, with operating income surging 74% YoY to $1.16 billion. This surpasses Intel’s $200 million in operating income from its datacenter and AI business unit during the same period.
However, sales of AMD’s Instinct MI300-series GPUs for AI and HPC disappointed market observers. The company’s client segment, which includes CPUs for desktops and laptops, showed exceptional growth, with a 58% YoY increase in net revenue to $2.31 billion and a 711% surge in operating income.
On the other hand, AMD’s gaming business struggled, with net revenue declining by 59% year-over-year to $563 million and operating income plummeting 78%. The company attributed this decline primarily to lower sales of Radeon discrete GPUs and system-on-chips for game consoles.
Despite some disappointing results, AMD’s overall performance was impressive, with revenue reaching $7.658 billion in Q4 2024 and net income hitting $482 million. For the full year 2024, AMD’s revenue reached a record $25.8 billion, with net income of $1.641 billion.
