Trump’s VP Vance Makes AI Summit Debut Amid Tensions with Europe and China

US Vice President JD Vance made his international debut at a high-stakes AI summit in Paris, where he pushed back on European efforts to tighten AI oversight while advocating for a more open approach.

The 40-year-old vice president attended the summit alongside world leaders, top tech executives, and policymakers to discuss artificial intelligence’s impact on global security, economics, and governance. High-profile attendees included Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, signaling Beijing’s deep interest in shaping global AI standards.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for “simplifying” rules in France and the European Union to allow AI advances, citing sectors like healthcare, mobility, energy, and resynchronizing with the rest of the world. However, negotiating strict limits on AI development was not expected to be on the agenda.

Vance is expected to meet separately with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as well as have a working lunch with Macron to discuss Ukraine and the Middle East. He also addressed concerns over censorship in Europe, emphasizing the importance of free and open debate.

The summit marked a three-way race for AI supremacy between Europe, China, and the US, with Vance’s debut abroad aimed at shaping global AI governance. A global public-private partnership named “Current AI” will be launched to support large-scale initiatives that serve the general interest.

As tensions between the US, Europe, and China continue, experts warn of a need for international cooperation on AI development and regulation. The US approach has been criticized for prioritizing technological competition over norms and human relationships with global partners.
