Sudan Army Prepares New Government Amid Recapture of Khartoum

The Sudanese military has called for diplomatic support to form a new government after recapturing the capital, Khartoum, from rival forces. The army’s leader, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said he will establish a “technocratic” wartime government with a prime minister, despite insisting there would be no negotiations with the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict between the two groups has been ongoing for nearly two years, resulting in 12 million people being displaced and leaving many without food. Gen Burhan stated that the new government will help complete military objectives to “freedom Sudan from these rebels.”

The international community, including the UN, AU, and Arab League, have been urged by the foreign ministry to support the new roadmap for peace and stability in Sudan.

The conflict began in April 2023 over disagreements on the future shape of the government. Both sides have been accused of committing atrocities against civilians, with their leaders being sanctioned by the US.

The army has recently gained victories against the RSF in Khartoum and Gezira state, but the conflict continues in western Sudan, where the RSF controls most of the Darfur region.
