Amazon Clarifies DEI Commitment Amid Site Changes and Program Halt

Amazon has clarified its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the wake of recent changes to some of its websites and programs. In a late January meeting with employees, Vice President of Technology Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec reassured staff that Amazon remains dedicated to DEI initiatives.

The move comes as other tech giants like Meta and Target have scaled back their DEI efforts in response to pressure from conservative activists and the Trump administration. However, Amazon is not pulling back on its own programs.

According to a meeting transcript obtained by Business Insider, Tomsen Bukovec acknowledged that Amazon had made changes to some of its DEI websites but emphasized that these changes did not alter the company’s underlying commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The AWS executive also confirmed that Amazon would continue to support LGBTQ+ initiatives, including a popular transgender benefit. Instead, the company focused on streamlining its messaging and prioritizing programs with proven outcomes.

Amazon’s decision follows months of speculation about the company’s approach to DEI. In December, Vice President of Inclusive Experiences and Technology Candi Castleberry announced that several “outdated” DEI programs would be shut down in favor of those with demonstrated impact. The changes were reportedly made to improve the clarity and effectiveness of Amazon’s DEI messaging.

Despite the company’s efforts to reassure employees, some have expressed concern about the changes. However, Amazon’s spokesperson has stated that the company remains committed to creating a diverse and inclusive culture, as outlined in its policy positions.
