Central Florida Drivers Targeted by Smishing Schemes

A growing scam is targeting residents in Central Florida and around the country through deceptive text messages claiming unpaid tolls. These messages, designed to steal personal information, can seem harmless but are actually a threat to users’ sensitive data.

Danny Jenkins, CEO of ThreatLocker, warns that these messages often direct users to fake websites with slightly altered domain names, crafted to steal personal info such as credit card details and driver’s license numbers. Clicking on the link can prompt users to provide more information, which could lead to identity theft and unauthorized transactions.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a consumer alert warning the public about these scams. SunPass, a toll payment system in Central Florida, confirmed that their messages were not sent by them and emphasized they do not ask customers to make payments or take immediate action via text.

If you receive one of these texts and think you might owe a toll, visit the official website directly to check your accounts and never click on links in unsolicited messages. SunPass advises customers to contact them directly at 1-888-TOLL FLA (1-888-865-5352) or report suspicious messages to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
