US Vice President JD Vance faced criticism on Sunday for suggesting that judges should not control executive power, despite his own educational background at Yale Law School. Vance’s comments came in response to a federal judge’s decision to block Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from accessing Treasury Department payment systems.
Vance stated that judges can’t control the executive’s legitimate power, citing examples such as military operations and prosecutorial discretion. However, others pointed out that this ignores the system of checks and balances established by the Constitution, which includes the judiciary as a co-equal branch to ensure executive actions comply with laws.
New York Rep. Daniel Goldman reminded Vance that the judiciary plays a crucial role in ensuring the executive follows the law, saying “if you do, then you won’t have problems.” Another user noted that courts have overturned executive actions by presidents Nixon, Bush, and Trump, highlighting judges’ authority to rule on executive decisions.
Musk responded to the judge’s decision with calls for impeachment and described him as “corrupt.” He also proposed a plan to fire the worst-performing appointed judges every year.
