Gmail users are being targeted by sophisticated AI-driven scams that impersonate Google representatives. According to the FBI, these scammers use caller ID features to make it appear as if the call is coming from Google, warning users that their account may have been accessed overseas.
The scammers then send an email claiming to be from Google, urging the user to recover their account using a code provided in the email. However, doing so could allow the hacker to access the user’s account.
To protect yourself, the FBI advises never giving away login information and passwords over the phone. If you’re unsure about a call, hang up and contact the company at its posted customer service number. Gmail users can also enable advanced protection features with passkeys and smart keys, which secure their accounts even if login information is stolen.
Experts warn that these scammers are not limited to Gmail targets; they can also be used for bank account, cryptocurrency wallet, and other types of access.
