Astronomers have discovered a star-planet duo moving at an incredible 1.2 million miles per hour through the Milky Way, with the planet likely orbiting a small, fast-moving star outside our solar system’s habitable zone. Researchers analyzed data from the Keck and Gaia telescopes to determine if this system contains a star with a planet or a massive rogue planet with a moon. The duo’s speed may be sufficient for it to escape the Milky Way and venture into intergalactic space, prompting NASA’s upcoming Roman Space Telescope to help confirm how common planets are around hypervelocity stars.
