WP Engine Loses 16,000 Sites as WordPress Sues Over Trademark Dispute

A new website called WP Engine Tracker reveals that over 16,000 sites have left hosting provider WP Engine since a feud began between the company and WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg. Automattic, which runs a rival web hosting service, confirmed its involvement in creating the site.

The move comes as Automattic disputes WP Engine’s use of the WordPress trademark, claiming it has tricked users into believing the two are associated. The feud escalated when WP Engine asked WordPress to pay an 8% licensing fee for using the WordPress trademark.

As a result, many customers have left WP Engine in favor of other hosting providers. In response, Automattic has promoted alternative options through its official Twitter handle. The situation remains ongoing, with both parties engaged in a legal battle.
