John Oliver stopped by The Daily Show on Monday to mock the United States’ lack of checks and balances on the Trump administration. Unlike his host Jon Stewart’s assumption that he was there for a heart-to-heart, Oliver gloated about the U.S. government’s inability to rein in executive power.
Oliver referenced America’s historical rebellion against British rule, saying “America had its little fun, didn’t you, in experimenting with democracy?” He pointed out that despite claiming to want reform, the country is still exhibiting imperialistic tendencies, citing examples such as military interventions and economic exploitation.
When Stewart tried to correct him, Oliver countered, “Have you seen anything America’s done over the last 50 years? Because for a country that doesn’t want to be an empire, you’re doing a pretty f—ing good impression of one right now.”
Stewart was left with a somber realization: “We really have become our father.” However, Oliver offered a consoling message, saying “The arc of history is so long it eventually becomes a circle, and you end up right where you started.”
