Research suggests that high levels of “good” cholesterol may actually increase the risk of developing glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness. A new study, published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, found that for every moderate increase in HDL-C levels, the risk of glaucoma rose by 5%. In contrast, higher levels of LDL-C and triglycerides were associated with a reduced risk.
The study, which analyzed data from over 400,000 participants, reveals that the relationship between cholesterol and eye health is more complex than previously thought. The researchers suggest that genetic factors may play a role in these associations, but further studies are needed to investigate the mechanisms behind them. This finding challenges the long-held notion that high HDL-C levels universally benefit health.
