Jets Part Ways with Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets have parted ways with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, marking the end of an era for the team. With no clear heir apparent, the Jets are facing a familiar problem – quarterback purgatory.

Rodgers’ future was uncertain, but his departure will still impact the team’s salary cap. Releasing him would result in $49 million in dead cap charges, which can be spread over two years if designated as a June 1 cut. The Jets’ new general manager, Darren Mougey, has previously dealt with similar situations.

The Jets are expected to look for a veteran quarterback and possibly draft pick to fill the void. Tyrod Taylor, who has played well in limited opportunities, is seen as a potential bridge quarterback. However, his history of injuries makes him an uncertain choice. Jordan Travis, the team’s 2024 fifth-round pick, is still recovering from a devastating injury and is viewed as a developmental prospect.

The 2025 free agent market is thin, with top quarterbacks like Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, and Daniel Jones available. However, the Jets are unlikely to re-sign Darnold, who was drafted by the team in 2018 but had a disappointing stint.

Kirk Cousins is an intriguing option, as his former GM, Rick Spielman, is now with the Jets. The Falcons’ decision to commit to Michael Penix Jr. has made Cousins available, and he would be a cost-effective choice for the Jets. However, releasing Rodgers without him on the team’s cap could be seen as taking a risk.

The draft offers little hope for finding a surefire replacement, with the top two quarterbacks in the class already taken. Evaluators say there is a significant drop-off to the next tier of prospects.

New general manager Glenn wants a “winner” – mentally and physically tough – from his quarterback. This echoes his experience in 1998 when he dealt with Neil O’Donnell’s departure. The Jets hope to find a player like Vinny Testaverde, who led them to the AFC Championship Game in 1998.

While Rodgers’ leadership was questioned by some coaches, his on-field performance is still impressive, and he has been a productive starter for the Jets. However, the team’s new culture and scheme under Glenn may not be a good fit for the veteran quarterback.
