A protester who held up Sudanese and Palestinian flags during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show at the Super Bowl has been banned for life from all NFL stadiums and events, a league spokesperson told CNN. The individual was confirmed to be part of the performance but acted without coordinating with showrunners.
The protest occurred late in Lamar’s set, showing footage of the protester wearing black clothing with the flags visible. The demonstrator was seen running onto the field before security personnel grabbed him. The flags were briefly shown in the background during the Super Bowl broadcast.
The NFL confirmed that the protester is a member of the 400-strong cast that performed on the field but did not identify them by name, citing an ongoing investigation. However, New Orleans-based artist Zül-Qarnain Nantambu identified himself to multiple news outlets as the ejected performer.
Nantambu said he held up the flags to highlight human suffering in Sudan and Gaza, where millions are affected by humanitarian crises. The Council on American-Islamic Relations described the demonstrator as a hero, calling for recognition of humanity towards those suffering abroad due to US foreign policy.
