US Vows to Remain AI Leader Amid EU Regulations

US Vice President JD Vance warned Europeans that excessive regulations on artificial intelligence could “kill” the technology during a French-hosted AI summit in Paris. He rejected content moderation as “authoritarian censorship,” criticizing the EU’s Digital Services Act and online privacy rules, known as GDPR. Vance emphasized that the US wants to remain the dominant force in AI, strongly opposing the European Union’s tougher regulatory approach.

The US and Britain did not sign up to a final statement of the summit, which said AI should be inclusive, open, ethical, and safe. China, on the other hand, joined the declaration, with Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing pledging to work with other countries to safeguard security and share achievements in artificial intelligence.

Vance also took aim at China, stating that partnering with authoritarian regimes would “chain” a nation’s information infrastructure. European lawmakers approved the bloc’s AI Act last year, which aims to govern the technology comprehensively.

The summit highlighted the shift in AI governance from concerns around safety to geopolitical competition. The US is now focusing on accelerated innovation and seeing regulation as a barrier to opportunity.
